2. Teachers know how children grow.
The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and provides instruction that supports their intellectual, social, and personal development.

Evidence 2:

Rationale 2: This unit was developed in EDT672-Teaching and Learning Online. I took a unit that I already teach and turned it into a partial online course. Students are taught how to set up a budget, make adjustments to that according to circumstance and also effective manage money through a checking account. They use their own interests and situations in their planning and shopping. Setting up the unit to be done as a combination of online and face-to-face instruction promotes independence in students. Having them participate in online as well as classroom discussions promotes social development in various settings.

In developing this unit I gained a new respect for online learning. It helped me to see the potential for student growth by allowing them different venues for their work performance, both in class and online, which helps students of all ability levels experience success.

KSD

2.K.1. The teacher understands how learning occurs—how students construct knowledge, acquire skills, and develop habits of mind—and how to use instructional strategies that promote student learning for a wide range of student abilities.

Learning is different for all students. Some are really good at memorization of facts and formulas while others need practical application of a skill in order to learn a mathematical concept. This partial online unit provides opportunity for both of these methods of learning. Basic percent and discount formulas are used within a simulated experience. Students can use memorized facts but it is not necessary for success.

2.S.3. The teacher assesses students’ thinking and experiences as a basis for instructional activities (i.e., encouraging discusussion, listening and responding to group interaction, and eliciting samples of student thinking orally and in writing).

Throughout this unit, students participate in classroom discussions as well as answer online discussion questions. An important part of their learning is sharing ideas on how their work is progressing as well as what they are learning.

2.D.2.: The teacher is disposed to use students’ strengths as a basis for growth, and their errors as an opportunity for learning.

This unit allows for students to do work independently and in small parts. As they are doing things correctly they can experience success, share that with others and move along. Students that are struggling or making errors will have plenty of opportunity to learn from others and still keep pace.
